Because of its relative size the little finger on the right hand is not normally used. The right hand fingering are abbreviations of the Spanish words pulgar, indicio, medio, anular. |

Fingers of the left hand are numbered from the index finger. The thumb is not used in classical technique but is used by some steel string fingerstyle players. |

A number attached to
a note indicates the left hand finger to be used. A number enclosed within a circle indicates the sting upon which the note is to be played. |

This sign represents a full bar at the 7th fret (Note the use of Roman numerals). The index finger of the left hand is placed across the six strings and holds down each string. |

This is the sign for the half bar where the left hand index finger holds down from two to five strings. Note that the half bar does not necessarily mean three strings. |
